Yellow leaves on plants: 7 causes and how to tell them apart
Yellow leaves are the single most common symptom growers worry about, and the single most ambiguous. A yellow leaf can mean your plant is drowning, starving, sunburnt, or simply shedding its oldest growth on schedule. The pattern of yellowing, which leaves, where on the leaf, how fast, almost always tells you which one. This guide walks you through the seven most common causes, what each looks like, and what to do today.
1. Overwatering, the most common cause
Yellowing that starts at the lower leaves, spreads upward, and is accompanied by soft, limp leaves or a musty soil smell is almost always overwatering. The roots are sitting in water, suffocating, and starting to rot, and a rotting root system can't deliver nitrogen to the upper plant, so the lower leaves yellow first.
The fix is to stop watering immediately, move the plant to a drier spot with good airflow, and let the top 2–3 inches of soil dry out completely before watering again. If the pot has no drainage, repot now, drainage is non-negotiable for almost every plant. If you suspect the roots are already rotting (mushy, brown, foul-smelling), unpot the plant, trim the dead roots with sterilized scissors, and re-pot in fresh dry mix.
Most overwatering happens not because growers water too often, but because the pot can't drain. Always pair a watering schedule with a pot that drains, drainage holes, well-draining mix, no decorative pots without saucers.
2. Underwatering, the obvious one, often misidentified
Underwatered plants yellow too, but the leaves go crispy at the edges first, then yellow, then drop. The soil is bone-dry and pulled away from the sides of the pot. Newer leaves may look fine at first because the plant prioritizes them, older leaves get sacrificed.
Soak the pot in water (sit it in a tray for 20 minutes), let it drain fully, and then resume a more frequent watering schedule. Once a plant has been chronically underwatered, the soil itself may have become hydrophobic, water runs off without absorbing. A deep soak fixes that.
3. Nitrogen deficiency, pale, uniform yellowing of older leaves
Nitrogen deficiency causes uniform pale-yellow chlorosis (loss of green) starting on the oldest leaves. The whole leaf turns yellow at once, not the edges, not the veins, the whole thing. Nitrogen is mobile inside the plant, so when supply runs low, the plant pulls nitrogen out of old leaves to feed new growth.
Most potting soils run out of usable nitrogen within 3–6 months. If your plant is past that and showing this pattern, feed it. A balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10 or a tomato-specific blend, diluted per label) once every 2–4 weeks during the growing season is enough for most houseplants.
Outdoor and edible plants, tomatoes, peppers, leafy greens, burn through nitrogen faster and benefit from monthly feedings or a slow-release pellet.
4. Iron or magnesium deficiency, yellowing between green veins
When the leaf turns yellow but the veins stay green, that's called interveinal chlorosis, and it usually points to iron or magnesium deficiency. Iron deficiency starts on the newest leaves (iron is not mobile inside the plant); magnesium deficiency starts on the oldest leaves (magnesium is mobile).
Both are usually caused by soil pH being out of range, too alkaline locks out iron, too acidic locks out magnesium. Test your soil pH (cheap meter or paper test) before adding more fertilizer; a foliar spray of chelated iron or Epsom salts (1 tablespoon per gallon, magnesium sulfate) is a fast fix while you correct the underlying pH.
5. Light stress, yellowing with browning patches
Plants moved suddenly from low light to direct sun can develop yellow patches that bleach to pale tan or brown, the chlorophyll has photo-oxidized. The pattern is irregular and shows up on the leaves facing the light source.
Move the plant back to indirect light and trim off the most damaged leaves. Reintroduce strong light gradually over 7–10 days. The reverse, too little light, typically causes leggy stretching and yellowing of the lowest leaves rather than patches.
6. Pests, yellowing with stippling, webbing, or sticky residue
Spider mites, aphids, and thrips all cause yellowing. The giveaway is the texture: spider mites leave fine stippling (tiny pale dots) plus webbing under the leaves; aphids leave sticky honeydew on the leaves and stems; thrips leave silvery streaks.
Spray the affected leaves with a strong jet of water to knock pests off, then apply insecticidal soap or neem oil weekly until clear. Isolate the plant from your other plants, these pests spread fast.
7. Natural aging, the bottom-most leaves only
Sometimes a yellow leaf is just an old leaf. Plants regularly shed their lowest, oldest leaves to redirect resources to new growth. If only one or two of the very lowest leaves are yellowing, slowly, while everything else looks healthy, this is normal. Pull them off when they start to detach easily, and don't worry.

- Should I cut off yellow leaves?
- Yes, once they've started to detach easily or are completely yellow. A leaf that's more than half-yellow has lost most of its photosynthetic capacity and is now a drain on the plant. Cleanly snip it at the base of the petiole with sterilized scissors. Don't pull, you can tear the stem.
- Will yellow leaves turn green again?
- Almost never. Yellowing means chlorophyll has broken down inside that leaf and the plant has typically already started pulling nutrients out of it. Focus on protecting the green leaves that are left and supporting healthy new growth. Removing the yellow leaves doesn't hurt the plant and helps prevent fungal issues.
- How fast should I expect to see new green growth after fixing the cause?
- Most houseplants put out visible new growth within 2–3 weeks of correcting overwatering or nitrogen deficiency. Light stress recovery takes longer, 4–6 weeks for the plant to fully re-acclimate. - Can yellow leaves be a sign of a plant disease, not just stress?
- Yes: viruses (mosaic patterns), bacterial wilts, and some fungal infections (Fusarium, Verticillium) cause yellowing too, though the pattern is usually distinctive (asymmetric, V-shaped, or vein-clearing).
